Sri Lanka : refugee camp 5 by arnaudlegrand Sri Lanka : refugee camp 5 by arnaudlegrand
After the tsunami 2004, the Sri Lankan army gathered survivors of totally devasted areas in temporary camps settled by non govermental organizations close to the capital, Colombo. Two weeks after the tsunami, this government forbade adoption, even from Sri Lankans couples, in order to prevent sexual tourism. Almost two years after, one thousand people live ressourceless in wooden hutments and share a single tap in this camp located 1 km south of Colombo. Four hundred of them are children and orphans abandoned to themselves, suffering from malnutrition and poor hygiene. In spite of receiving more than 130 million euros of international subsidies, the Sri Lankan government has not done anything so far for these people, except moving them hundreds of kilometers away from their village.

Some of these kids are also suffering from psychological trauma and do not speak neither communicate at all. Many of these abandoned children, without any security nor protection, are kidnapped and then forced to be child soldiers by the LTTE rebels leading the civil war against the goverment in the north of the country (summer 2006).

Refugee camp 5 by *Archange Wow. I mean ... wow ... in a way which makes me think, "all she wants to be with are her mommy and daddy and possibly sisters and brothers." But ... no ... she sits in an orphanage. What I love that this deviant did ... was show her in such a beautiful light (pardon the visual pun) ... and ... well ... this is something that affects me. I hope whoever she is, wherever she is ... she feels the positive energy I'm thinking for her. I hope ... she finds what my little girl has. I hope. Thanks, mate, for shooting this, uploading and letting the rest of us see what you saw. ( Suggested by nolavon and Featured by cweeks )

The angle of lighting in this photo is excellent, in my opinion. It brings the highlight and shadow to perfectly fall in her face and give us much deeper feelings.

Composition, focus, and all other technical stuff are very well done, maybe it was already the best in that kind of situation.

The strong looks in her eye is the power in this photo, it is the one that makes this photo have so much impact for the viewer.

The book in the bottom left of the frame add some information. But, I don't know, it just too contrast that looks like it want to get more attention.
What do you think?

Where the white spots on the concrete are, they make her look like she has wing; and her headband the halo. Very awesome indeed.

Things like this make me so angry. What could be more important than 1,000 children? Nothing that I can think of. Something has to be done.

I hope they can all find someone to care for them.

My god, what a beautiful child. It devistates me to hear about the treatment these people go through and how little the government is doing to help. Are you in Sri Lanka with some sort of organization?

I was freelance there. I am so digusted by the behaviour of the sri lankan government... just fucking bribed politicians who make money with the war and do not care about the people, on his own misery as always... do you know that the president took all the money of the tsunami subsidies on his peronnal account ? what a bunch of motherfuckers... :(

What assholes. fucking politics piss me off. how can someone do something like that? take money from other countries and do absolutely nothing for the thousands suffering and not feel guilty. its horrible. i just finished reading "a fine balance" which is about india and it's crisis involving religion and government and rights. im still young (15) but as soon as im done school i will probably do something with an organization of some sort, depending on the area of work i get into. its good to hear that some one shares my opinions and is out there making a difference :)

art is a way to communicate and educate people... but what to do ? kick the gov'ass, vote clever, and keep on educating children.

God, the things some people put fellow human beings through. It is disgusting.
But you knew that.
In the thumbnail, the cracked floor around her looks almost like the suggestion of angel wings.
She has a beautiful face, and the perspective and greyscale is magnificent.

Si, dans de telles conditions, elle arrive quand même à sourire, faut alors que tous les chiâleux de cette planète réalisent à quel point ils sont gâtés.

Superbe.

It's been a long time since I last visited your gallery mister.
There's this ethereal quality about this photo. The lighting and exposure are wonderful.
It's sad that after almost 2 years alot of communities are still in pieces. But such is life in this part of the world is what some would say I guess.
